Open Letter to All Candidates Running for President in 2008

Dear Presidential Candidate

How would you and your running mate like to win the election of 2008? You can, by taking the right direction on one major issue. It is a concern that affects the US economy, national security, foreign policy, globalization, the wars in the Middle East and a worsening geopolitical situation. It attacks climate change, the federal budget and reversing the balance of trade. At home it solves many economic, social and political problems.

Here is the key to wining in November. You and your running mate’s stance on renewable energy policy and energy independence must be pursued with an all out grand-scale program. It will take a governmental, public and private partnership of colossal dimensions historically similar to but bigger than the Panama Canal, the New Deal, Manhattan Project, D-Day Invasion, the space program and Homeland security War on Terrorism after 9/11.

Pursuing this issue with strong leadership and showing that it is financially and technically possible will go a long way in solidifying your victory. You must have appropriate stances on all the other important issues but relegating renewable energy as a side issue is counter productive. The candidate must have a solid vision for renewable energy and the guts to tackle the special interest that will fight against it. Come up with a workable plan or the voters will look elsewhere. They now see a current vacuum of leadership about this and politics as usual is not going to work this time.

Every segment of the renewable energy industry is brimming with new ideas, science and technology that hold promise. There is no silver bullet to hit this illusive target but a combination of systems could do it. European countries are dramatically showing success in this arena. The voters perceive the recent announcements of large corporate renewable energy startup programs as small scale public relations ploys and stop-gap agendas to assuage the public’s concern for climate change.

Also congress will start mandating they move in the direction of energy independence. The energy industry does not want large windfall profit taxes on the polluting energy they make billions on. Corporate stakeholders are curious where their profits are going to come from as conventional sources of energy become less available and economically attractive. Renewable energy options have been researched and studied to death by universities, state and federal governments and other groups. The voters want true change and real reform and they do not want to wait for decades for it to happen.

To capture the Presidency in 2008 it would be wise for candidates to listen and take action to reflect the views above.
